Texas Authorities Aim to Keep Roadways Safe from Impaired Drivers During Holiday Season

This week and the following week will make for busy times for many Texans in the full swing of the holiday season. From holiday parties to road trips and family get-togethers, many residents across the state will be hitting the road to get where they need to go, especially if it's a celebration you just can't miss. Unfortunately, increased traffic and more drivers who get behind the wheel after drinking make for more dangerous roadways.

According to statistics from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDot), the holiday season - including Christmas and New Years - is one of the most dangerous times of year on public roads and highways. This is why TxDot and law enforcement agencies across the state have stepped up to increase their efforts on getting drunk and drugged drivers off the road.

If you plan on celebrating and enjoying the holidays with alcohol the next few weeks, The Daspit Law Firm would like to remind you about drinking responsibly and finding a sober ride. Far too many victims suffer injuries and preventable death as a result of drunk driving during the holidays. Also keep in mind that authorities will be on high alert!

To help keep yourself and others safe this holiday season, remember the following:

  • Don't Risk It - If you've had a couple drinks and aren't sure about getting on the road, don't risk it! Your driving abilities can be impaired with only one drink, thereby placing others at risk. Officers will also be aggressively enforcing DWI & DUI laws, so do yourself a favor by not getting behind the wheel after drinking!
  • Practice Defensive Driving - The holidays see an increase in both overall traffic and impaired drivers. Make sure you protect yourself by being well rested and always paying attention whenever you're behind the wheel. Be alert and aware on the road and practice defensive driving skills for when other drivers are careless.
  • Plan for a Ride - Alcohol-related accidents cause thousands of injuries and deaths during the holiday season. If you plan on drinking, the safest thing you can do is to plan for a ride before you drink! Remember that you can designate a sober driver, buy a hotel, call a cab, use ridesharing services like uber, or take public transportation!

The Daspit Law Firm hopes everyone stays safe when on the road this holiday season. If you have questions about your rights after an auto accident, contact an injury attorney from our firm today!
