Austin Needs More lifeguards, Officials Report

Austin Needs More lifeguards, Officials Report

Austin city pools will open next week, but the city doesn't have enough lifeguards. According to a local news source, the Aquatic program manager said that finding teens willing to work as lifeguards is more difficult this year, especially since the pools will be open for extended hours this year.

As an incentive, the city will hold a job fair today to fill the remaining positions. City officials will also spend more on the pools this year, devoting $850,000 to for public swimming pools in Austin this year.

The city needs up to 750 people to work as lifeguards. If the jobs aren't filled in time, the city may cut hours for kids pools and diving areas.

Safety Tips for Swimming Pools

Drowning and slip and fall injuries are two of the most common forms of swimming pool accidents. According to research, some of the main safety concerns associated with public pools are:

  • Overcrowding
  • Inadequate Supervision
  • Unclear Water
  • Missing Safety Equipment
  • Untrained Lifeguard
  • Unlit Pools

To avoid an accident or injury, always supervise children near pools. Never allow a child to swim alone. Additionally, stay clear of overcrowded and unlit pools. If lifeguards cannot see the pool clearly, lifeguards cannot identify drowning victims.
