Are Tricycles Dangerous for Your Children?

Are Tricycles Dangerous for Your Children?

Almost every person can appreciate the look on a child’s face when he/she receives a new toy. Their eyes light up, their smiles extends across their faces, and excitement is in every ounce of their beings. But what if you were told that the toy you considered buying your child was dangerous? Would you still buy it?

Recent studies show that tricycles can be one of the most dangerous toys of all. In fact, tricycles were considered the second-most dangerous common cause of toy-related deaths for quite some time. In 2012, tricycles took the lead when five children were killed in tricycle-related accidents. Four out of those five children died after tipping into swimming pools and drowning while the other child fell over and slammed his head on the concrete. This child suffered a detrimental head injury that eventually led to death.

A study conducted by the Medical College of Georgia and Emory University found that in 2012 and 2013, over 9,000 tricycle-related injuries were treated in emergency rooms across the United States. Of this total, researchers found that two-year-olds were the most frequently injured age group and that boys were more likely to be hurt than girls. The study proved that roughly three percent of the injured children were hospitalized, some suffering injuries that resulted in fractures, amputations, and internal organ damages. Additionally, researchers found that most of the injuries children faced were due to head injuries while most deaths were due to unsupervised children who fell into swimming pools and drowned.

Can the Design Be Part of the Problem?

While the American Academy of Pediatrics argues that children do not develop the coordination to operate these toys until age three, some argue that these toys can be designed in a different and safer way. Because many of these accidents occur when children turn too sharply and tip over, many individuals believe that these three-wheelers should be made so the front wheels are not able to turn as far.

Reports state that the safest tricycles are ones that are low to the ground and have large wheels. Children should wear helmets any time they are riding such toys. Of course, additional protection, such as kneepads, elbow pads, and wrist guards can be worn for extra safety. Parents and caretakers should supervise children at all times.
